QStar HSM

QStar HSM is a storage management application that combines features and functionality of Volume Management with Hierarchical Storage Management that will intelligently archive data to DVD, Magneto-Optical, and UDO Optical jukeboxes, as well as DLT, LTO, and AIT Tape Libraries.

By providing a sophisticated set of data migration capabilities that can be used with Windows, UNIX, or Linux operating systems, QStar HSM becomes a powerful storage management tool that will meet the requirements for any data storage application across any operating system.

QStar HSM is recommended for the following data storage applications:

Regulatory Compliance
Using QStar HSM with a DVD jukebox, Optical jukebox, or Tape Library to store data on non-erasable, non-rewriteable media types such as CD-R, DVD-R, Magneto-Optical, and Ultra Density Optical, or LTO and AIT WORM tape, in order to comply with regulatory requirements for data retention.

Data Archiving
Using QStar HSM with a DVD jukebox, Optical jukebox, or Tape Library with secure, reliable, write-once media types such as CD-R, DVD-R, Magneto-Optical, and Ultra Density Optical, or DLT, LTO and AIT tapes, for long-term storage of data.

Secondary Storage
Using QStar HSM with a DVD jukebox, Optical jukebox, or Tape Library with rewriteable media types such as DVD-RAM, Magneto-Optical, and Ultra Density Optical, or DLT, LTO, and AIT Tapes to store large volumes of information, and reduce storage and backup requirements on local server hard drives and disk arrays.

Highlights of QStar HSM include:

  • Intelligent File Migration – Copy files to optical media in an optical jukebox or tape media in a tape library based on migration criteria assigned by the system administrator.
  • Optical Media Support – Supports DVD-RAM, Magneto-Optical, and UDO Optical, with the ability to mix media and optical jukebox types on the same server within the same File System.
  • Tape Media Support – Supports DLT, LTO, and AIT, with the ability to mix media and tape library types on the same server within the same File System.
  • Disk Caching – Use server hard disk space to enhance read and write performance by serving requests for frequently read files directly from the cache and reducing media exchanges within the jukebox.
  • Copy Disk – Automatically make backup copies of optical media that contain data files, either incrementally as the original is written to, or all at once when the original is filled to capacity.
  • UDF compliant – Write to media using the standard UDF file system, allowing media to be transported to other platforms and stand-alone drives and remain readable outside of QStar HSM.
  • Integral Volumes – Combines multiple pieces of media into a single logical volume, dynamically adding blank media as the volume grows.
  • File Spanning – Files and directories can span across physical media surfaces
  • Remote Administration – Using the QStar HSM remote administration module, media, volumes, and configuration parameters can be managed without having to physically be at the server.
  • Off-line Management – Media can be removed from the optical jukebox or tape library and files contained within are still referenced and available to the file system.
  • Statistics – View details on media usage and utilization of hard disk cache
